Healthcare and social systems are a fundamental part of what we know as the European social model and are rightly cherished across the continent. However, an ageing population and accompanying chronic diseases have pushed healthcare and social expenditure to new heights. In the future, and in response to the economic crisis, healthcare systems in the European Union need to be managed in a smarter way. One way legislators can do this is by focusing on the societal impact of pain.
