Improving postoperative pain care
Rianne van Boekel – Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Netherlands
Van Boekel describes acute and chronic pain as a personal experience influenced by biological, psychological, societal and spiritual dimensions.
„Why do I have to suffer so much pain? We fly to the moon, but professionals like you are not able to alleviate this pain?“
It is one of the quotes from patients which inspired her to reflect on her own knowledge and work.
Rianne van Boekel focuses in her thesis on postoperative pain, which might increase postoperative complications, prolong the length of stay in hospital, reduce patient satisfaction and quality of life and which can also be a considerable burden for the health care system.
The thesis is separated into three parts to address following aspects of postoperative pain care
At the end, Rianne van Boekel concludes that future research should focus on the improvement in pain-related outcomes in relation to multidimensional pain assessment and treatment decisions.
Congratulations to Rianne van Boekel for this fantastic work on postoperative pain who successfully defended her thesis on Thursday December 14th!
