![On 22 January the SIP Partners (EFIC, PAE, ACN and Grünenthal) met to reflect on the achievements in 2018 and to discuss the strategy for 2019 in more detail.
The two-level strategy, endorsed in November 2018 at the SIP Steering Committee [ADD LINK to article on this on the website], focuses on both the EU level activities and national SIP platforms.
Communications
For the overarching communications strategy, we have decided on the following:
continued strategic use of twitter [link to twitter handle] with quality content and graphics
increased knowledge sharing through the newly restructures website (now available in several languages [ADD LINK]

EU engagement
On the EU level, engaging with the European institutions and making the most of the changing political landscape following the 2019 European Parliamentary elections is the goal. To achieve this, engaging with key future and current MEPs such as the Spitzenkandidaten through endorsing the Joint Statement’s messages is essential. National SIPs are encouraged to engage with highly promising candidates.
We plan to engage with key officials from the European Commission’s DG RTD, DG SANTE and DG EMPL to maintain and deepen the relationships we built as the Thematic Network in 2018 [ADD link SIP website article on thematic network].
The basis of the engagement will be the work done within the framework of the Thematic Network (i.e., the Joint Statement) and achieve concrete policy outcomes. We want to especially understand and try to influence the next Commission’s working programme to include concrete actions on pain. The cooperation with CHRODIS+ “Employment in the Multi-Morbidity Chronic Care Model" Expert meeting will continue this year. In any case, leveraging on all four topics of the Joint Statement with all policymakers as much as possible is the goal.
National engagement
The focus for national SIPs is to further support the growth of national platforms through:
a toolkit
a video highlighting the societal impact of pain
the set-up of a buddy programme for national SIPs. In addition, the replication the survey on the status of the national pain plans will be rolled out.
To support you, we will host a SIP session focused on advocacy and introducing the advocacy toolkit we will develop this year for national SIP’s at the EFIC Congress 2019 on 4-7 September in Valencia, Spain [add website]. More information will be provided via email/on the newsletter/website. The final advocacy toolkit will be presented at the next SIP meeting.
