Many exciting activities related to Societal Impact of Pain (SIP) will take place in 2018. Building on our successes in Europe, we will focus on helping to establish activities at a national level this year.   Some countries have already started to identify key stakeholders representing the SIP partners who might initiate and drive national SIP platforms. Based on a common strategy, the international SIP partners will help them shaping up their national campaigns. The SIP platform will continue engagement both on the EU and national level, focusing on the following policy hooks: Pain as a healthcare indicator Pain as a chronic disease Pain education Pain jobs and social participation Pain accompanying other diseases Depending on existing coalitions, capacities and expertise, the national SIP platforms will be set up to define activities and initiatives which will take place in 2018. The first meeting of the MEP Interest Group on Brain, Mind and Pain of 2018 was held at the European Parliament in Brussels last week. The theme for the event was ‘How can the EU : #MakeWorkWork for young people affected by brain, mind and pain conditions?’ The meeting was hosted by Marian Harkin, co-chair of the Brain, Mind and Pain Interest Group, member of the European Parliament EMPL committee, and an MEP with a long-standing interest in Young people and also in Health issues. Survey of engagement within the EU Health Policy Platform is closed and SIP received the 2nd highest number of votes of all candidates! Throughout this process, we had the opportunity to see that interest for the social impact of pain really spans across many different types of stakeholders. The European Commission has given the SIP platform the opportunity to make the SIP Expert Group, on the EU Health Policy Platform, a “Thematic Network on SIP”. The announcement of the selected Thematic Networks is expected in February 2018. What does this mean? Within the EU Health Policy Platform, the SIP Expert Group will move into the public domain. This means that stakeholders will not have to register anymore to see the platform’s content – which will enable greater public outreach! In addition, the content of the platform will feed into a draft joint statement – a useful tool in pushing the Commission into legislative action on the issue of Pain. We want to thank all endorser of the SIP platform who have voted for SIP as a Thematic Network!

Pain Alliance Europe (PAE) carries on in 2018 its mission to create awareness about chronic pain. One of the association’s dedicated projects “Survey on chronic pain” – touches the core of the declared mission of the organisation, to give a voice to pain patients and make it heard there where decisions are taken and things may thus be changed for the better and in the interest of the patients. The 1st PAE Survey from 2017 has shown that 70% of the respondents needed over 1 year to get diagnosed. 78% of treated patients reported that their treatment was not as good as they expected. More Infos about the results can be found here. Please participate in the 2nd edition of the PAE Survey in 2018 which has just started. If you are a pain patient, a member of a pain patient’s family or extended family, a carer or a friend, and you have specific information on how the quality of a patient life is affected when dealing with a chronic pain condition, please take 5 minutes to complete our Survey in your preferred language

On the 31st December 2017, the application period has ended for the Brain, Mind and Pain – Patient-Centred Innovation Grant initiative. Pain Alliance Europe thanks all candidates who sent in their projects – we look forward to discovering your ideas! A Jury composed exclusively of patients and patients’ representatives ensures that the winning project(s) really represent the most valuable solution(s) for the patients, from a patient perspective. We are pleased and honored to announce the following members of the BMP Grant Jury: Danuta JAZŁOWIECKA MEP Camille BULLOT (EPF – Director of Operations & Engagement) Joke JAARSMA (EFNA Board Member –  Education and Training) Mariano VOTTA (ACN – Director) Joop VAN GRIENSVEN (PAE President) The assessment period will end early May and a communication will be issued at the end of the evaluations with all candidates to inform upon the results.
